Sushmita Sen is the first Indian who became Miss Universe and made the whole nation proud. She also won the Miss India crown in 1994. You will be surprised after knowing that a local tailor of Sarojini Nagar sewed her winning gown for her contest.
Sushmita Sen revealed about this when she invited in the show “Jeena Ise Ka Naam Hai”. She told there about her incredible journey from middle-class family girl to Miss India and then Miss Universe.
She said –
“I did not have so much money to afford a designer gown to wear on stage for the Miss India contest. We were supposed to wear four different costumes. We are middle-class people, and we knew our restrictions. My mother said, ‘so what? They are not going to look at your clothes; they are going to look at you.” So we went to Sarojini Nagar market. Downstairs, in the garage, there was a local tailor who made petticoats. We gave him the material and told him, ‘This will come on TV, so please stitch a good one’. So this is how he made my winning gown and my mother made a rose out of the remaining fabric”.
For her gloves, she also revealed that she purchased a pair of black socks and converted them into hand gloves by cutting them and added some elastic.
“The day I won Miss India wearing that gown was a huge day for me. Then I realized that you don’t need money to get what you want; your intentions should be right,” she said.
